Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches

About This Place

Lalibela is a breathtaking historical and spiritual landmark in northern Ethiopia, world-famous for its eleven monolithic churches carved directly into the earth from solid volcanic rock. Commissioned in the 12th century by King Lalibela to represent a "New Jerusalem," these structures were masterfully excavated downward, meaning every pillar, arch, and intricate window was shaped from the bedrock without the use of bricks or mortar. The most iconic of these, Biete Ghiorgis (the Church of St. George), is shaped like a perfect Greek cross and remains an architectural marvel of the medieval world. Today, Lalibela is not merely a museum but a vibrant center of the Ethiopian Orthodox faith, where white-robed pilgrims gather in the thousands to continue centuries-old traditions of prayer and song.
