About This Place

Awash National Park, established in 1966 as Ethiopia's first official national park, is located in the lowlands east of Addis Ababa. The park is defined by its dramatic volcanic landscape, dominated by the dormant Mount Fentale and the deep gorges carved by the Awash River. Its most iconic natural feature is the stunning Awash Falls, where the river thunders down into a massive canyon, creating a mist-filled spectacle that serves as the centerpiece of the park’s rugged beauty. The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly those looking to spot species adapted to arid environments. It is home to large populations of Beisa Oryx, Soemmering’s Gazelle, and Swayne’s Hartebeest, as well as olive and hamadryas baboons. Predators like lions, leopards, and black-backed jackals are also present, though they are more elusive. For birdwatchers, Awash is a paradise, boasting over 450 species, including the spectacular Abyssinian Roller and the massive Arabian Bustard, which thrive in the park’s acacia woodlands and open savannahs. Beyond its natural wonders, the region offers a glimpse into the geological and cultural history of the Rift Valley. Visitors can explore the Filwoha Hot Springs, where bright blue thermal waters create a lush oasis of palm trees in the middle of the dry plains. The park is also easily accessible, making it one of the most popular destinations for weekend trips from the capital. Whether watching the sunset over the Fentale crater or witnessing the power of the falls, Awash National Park provides a powerful introduction to the raw, untamed spirit of the Ethiopian lowlands.
