Chiera Churcher National Park

About This Place

Chiera Churcher National Park, located in southwestern Ethiopia between the Dawro and Konta zones, is a remote and largely untouched wilderness spanning over 1,200 square kilometers. Established to protect vital wildlife habitats, the park features a diverse and rugged landscape that ranges from 500 to 2,000 meters in elevation. Its terrain includes lush mountain forests, thick riverine woods, and tall-grass savannahs, all crisscrossed by numerous rivers, streams, and scenic crater lakes, creating a pristine environment far from the typical tourist routes. The park is most celebrated as a key stronghold for the African elephant in Ethiopia, harboring a significant population that can often be tracked on foot with the help of experienced local scouts. Beyond its famous elephants, the area serves as a refuge for 37 species of large mammals, including lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, hippos, defassa waterbucks, and giant forest hogs. Additionally, it is an exceptional destination for birdwatchers, with over 200 recorded species, including several that are endemic to Ethiopia, thriving within its varied ecosystems. Visiting Chiera Churcher is an adventurous endeavor best suited for those looking to experience nature in its rawest form. Due to its status as a relatively new and undeveloped destination, infrastructure is limited, offering visitors a unique opportunity for authentic, off-the-beaten-path exploration. The ideal time to visit is during the dry season from November to February, when trails are most accessible for hiking, trekking, and wildlife spotting in this quiet, stunning, and wildlife-rich sanctuary.
